Within a modern classroom teachers are more inclined to
utilise and incorporate technology and online resources, but it is quite
difficult to find the most effective ones. Matific successfully uses an
interactive based approach to support students understanding of math concepts
in an engaging way (Matific, 2013). Students are provided with a range of mini
games that assess their knowledge and test their understanding of each
mathematical strand. One key focus that drives students learning is that the
games don’t give the students the answers straight away, it provides them with
clues to try again. It is in my belief that this strategy promotes a healthy
balance between academic achievement and individual growth, it creates a safe
space where students can gradually learn new concepts and learn the important
ways of using a trial and error method. Another insightful aspect of using an
online resource such as Matific is that students who are more introverted in
the classroom can find an avenue of feeling more confident online without
facing the pressures that are more prevalent in social activities (Palloff
& Pratt, 2007). Regarding the effectiveness for teachers and pre-service
teachers I believe that this online tool can assist with promoting alternative
approaches for various math strands. For instance, the lesson could start off
with some group work when learning about measurement and be extended with a
twenty or so minute exercise on Matific, allowing the students to put what they
have learnt into extra practice.
