Week 6 - Reflection

Create 2 resources that can support student’s understanding of place value. Upload and reflect on their use with students. Support your ideas with literature.

Place value is an essential component in allowing students to count, order and represent numbers and demonstrate how these understandings were obtained. Hiebert and Wearne (1992) explain that connections need to be built between the key ideas of place value in order for individuals to grasp onto the concept successfully. I interpret this idea as a form of building the students basic understanding of representing numbers in hundreds, tens and ones and doing this in a structured and clear manner. Evidently the arrow resource allows the teacher to demonstrate that the arrows are situated on top of each other, for example in the stimulus the number is deconstructed in 300, 60 and 4. Personally I view this resource as a helpful starting point in assessing where the students are at in terms of how well they can identify where each number should be placed . Through doing this the students are making connections between the numbers and correctly identifying what the value of each is ; hundred , tens or ones .In the second resource I assertively chose this specific chart as I viewed it as a comprehensive way to indicate where each number should go in terms of millions to thousandths. This exercise would be a more extensive version of the first resource, and I feel as though once the students have gained a close look at the basic structure and concepts of the first they can move onto a more complex chart that can broaden their knowledge on understanding place value.
